Student Health Insurance 2017-2018: UnitedHealthcare

The California Institute of Integral Studies is vitally interested in making your academic and personal experience meaningful and successful. Your health and wellness are key components of that experience.  To ensure that students have access to the health care they need and to avoid the hardship of expensive medical bills, CIIS requires all full-time students to have adequate health insurance as a condition of enrollment.

For the 2017-2018 academic year, our sponsored student insurance plan has changed from Kaiser Permanente to UnitedHealthcare, a national Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), which means students have access to In-Network and Out-of-Network providers while at school, home or during travel. With this new plan we are able to offer our students a comprehensive, benefit-rich plan at a reduced premium.

Rates and detailed plan benefits will be posted through the Gallagher Student Health Website in the upcoming months. Please visit for more information. Options are also available for spouse and child add on.

UnitedHealthcare is the largest, national insurance carrier.  The plan is fully compliant with the provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and has several key features including:

  • Low Annual Deductibles: $200 In-Network and $400 Out-of-Network
  • Coverage at 80% In-Network and 60% Out-of-Network
  • $25 Office Visits for In-Network Providers (includes specialists and mental health providers)
  • Preventive care services covered at 100% In-Network
  • Prescription drug coverage: $15 copay/ Tier 1, $50 copay/ Tier 2, 20% coinsurance/ Tier 3
  • TeleHealth services available through Healthiest You
  • Wellness discounts including Vision and Dental

All full time-students will be required to purchase the UnitedHealthcare Plan unless proof of comparable insurance is provided during the waiver and enrollment period from July 3, 2017 through September 14, 2017.

Thank you for your attention to this important change in our student health program.  Gallagher Student Health & Special Risk will be administering the CIIS student health program and will be providing more information, over the next few months, on the California Institute of Integral Studies sponsored Health Insurance Plan and the online waiver process for 2017-2018. You can also access more information online by visiting and clicking on ‘My Benefits and Plan Information’ located to the left.
